A young group of 6 AMAC swimmers were in Edmonton attending the 2012 Short Course Age Group Trials this past weekend. The weather outside wasn't the best but Makendra Bessant, Madeline Comeau, Madison Hunt, Samantha Hunt, Emily Schlenker and Madison Squire sure showed they were at theirs.
There were many great things this weekend including best times, finals swims, new qualifying times and some fun with temporary tattoos to keep the meet eventful. The swimmers showed their great improvements combining for 32 best times between the 6 of them.
Makendra B was great improvement came in her 200 IM where she took off 10 seconds showing that all her strokes have made improvement. She is making great progress in her goal of reaching her 'A' times. Madeline C had 5 best times which helped her make 3 individual finals on the weekend. Madeline's best event came in the 100 Free where she narrowly missed her 'A' time by taking close to 5 seconds off her previous best. Madison H had the most fun I have ever seen her have at a swim meet and the 7 best times she had likely helped. Madison H dropped 15 seconds in 200 Free but the biggest improvement came in the 200 IM where she dropped 20 seconds from her previous best. Samantha H attended her first ever Age Group trials and came out with 5 bests on the weekend. Samantha showed her great improvements on breastroke as she had big drops in both the 50/100 Breast. Emily S just narrowly missed going 100% bests this weekend. Emily qualified only a few weeks ago and in that same event she dropped another 10 seconds and placed in the top 8 for 10 & Under girls as a 9 year old. Madison S had a event filled weekend and finished with 6 best times the biggest coming in her 100 /200 Breast. Madisons improvement had her finish close to, or on the podium on 3 occasions.
Madeline C: 50/100/200 Free, 200 IM, 200 FR/MR
Madison H: 200 Free, 200 Breast, 200 IM, 200 FR/MR
Emily S: 400 Free, 200 Back, 200 FR/MR
Madison S: 50/100/200 Breast, 200 FR/MR
At Age Group Trials swimmers are able to qualify for Age Group Championships one of two ways: making Alberta 'A's standard(s) and or by finishing 1st place for their age group at the swim meet. Between the 6 girls we had many swims really close to qualifying for Age Group Champs that will be in Calgary from March 9-11. Madison S in her 100 Breast was able to qualify in both ways. Madison narrowly missed the qualifying time in the Friday prelims session finishing 4th with a best time by 2 seconds. The finals for the 100 Breast was swam at Saturday evening finals and she was excited to get another crack at it. Madison took an additional 4 seconds off from the previous day and finished 1st punching her ticket to Calgary.
Thank you to Silver Tide Swim Club, volunteers, coaches and families for a great weekend! We are looking forward to having more fun and swimming fast in the coming months.
Well done AMAC swimmers!
